PAX Style

I didn't bother getting dressed today beyond an oversized sweater and pants, as it's my last day to completely veg out before starting my new job. I know, I was supposed to start yesterday, but that job did not work out (if you read my twitter you'll know why). Things did work out for me in the end though, because I have a new job that I start tomorrow. I'm very optimistic about this one!

Anyway, since I didn't post yesterday and I have no outfits to share today, I figured I should do something. I've been thinking about PAX (the Penny Arcade Expo, a gaming convention) a ton lately, as Greg and I are leaving for Seattle on Thursday to attend! It was Greg's birthday present to me back in May, and finally it shall be realized. I've never been to a convention before, so I'm dying of excitement!

In a fit of inspiration, I put together a Polyvore look for each day of the convention. These are the outfits I'd wear if I had my way. Unfortunately I'll have to improvise, but that will just make getting dressed more interesting. Behold!

I'd start out the convention with something comfortable and versatile, the old standby, jeans and a t-shirt. I'd mix it up with fun sneakers, layers, and accessories, and of course I'd wear a Yoshi shirt (favorite Mario character ever). I think layers are important, as you never know how warm or cold it might be in the convention center with tons of people milling about.

On day two I'd go for a more feminine look, but stick with a fun vibe and bright colors. Video games are inherently bright and colorful, so I reflected that in these outfits. I'd be comfortable all day in flat boots, a light dress, and a bag big enough to fit all of my portable gaming systems!

On day three I'd go all out! Print mixing, Mario t-shirt, bright accessories, and a Squirtle plushie! You may as well be remembered by everyone who sees you, right? It's important to make an impression, and with this super fun outfit, I'm sure I'd succeed. If only I actually had bright red geek glasses...

What do you think? Are geeky conventions something you'd like to check out sometime? What's an event you'd love to attend, and how would you dress for it?

Ready for Fall

I start work tomorrow morning; I'm so excited and nervous! Mostly nervous. I don't know what to expect, which always gives me a nice case of anxiety. Oh well, we'll see how it goes. I'm just super relieved to have a job, so I hope I don't screw it up on day one.

I'm wearing: Old Navy top and cardi, H&M top worn as skirt, Target shoes, F21 hat.

A friend of mine sent me this H&M top as a birthday present years ago, and I never wore it very often because it's a tube top and I didn't quite have the boobs to keep it from falling down. Well, my mom brought it to Portland along with a bunch of other clothes I left behind in Missoula, so I decided to try wearing it as a skirt. And it worked! I rather like the results, and I love re-purposing old things to make them wearable again. Huzzah!

It seems the city is as ready as I am for fall; it was quite cool most of the day, and it looks like the forecast for the next few days is cool, overcast, and possibly rainy. Ahhh. Sigh of relief.

Not really up to talking much today; I have a pile of books waiting for me to eagerly devour them, so I'd better get to it.

Fall Preview

New boots, guise! New boots! I've been wanting/needing some boots like these forever, and while these aren't exactly the genuine leather ones I had in mind... they were only $17 at Ross, so I'm satisfied. They're about a half size too big though, so I have to wear slipper-socks to make them fit right. Totes worth it. These things are comfy and will go with effing everything this fall!

I'm wearing: Target blazer and tights, thrifted dress, Forever21 belt, boots from Ross.

It was not quite cold enough today for this blazer, considering it's only 65 degrees outside, and sunny, but I felt like I needed to do the whole fall thing anyway. I don't know. Let's just say it's a fall "preview" for the ol' blog. Derp.

So okay, who else watches True Blood? Did you see the latest episode?! Don't you loooooove Eric?? I'm freaking out over here because it's not Sunday yet! And I love every single character in this show; it's kind of ridiculous! Waauugh True Blood! Discuss.

Oh, and another show I started watching: White Collar. I only watched the pilot last night, but it's super cute! Very fun characters, with a silly odd couple thing going. Plus the thief character is way hot. And it just looks to be a good, cute show. I think I'm gonna convince Greg to watch it with me! I already have Mad Men to watch when on my lonesome, and Greg and I are kind of in limbo with our other current shows (Leverage and Fringe), so we need something new to entertain us.

What fall premieres are you guys excited about in the upcoming months? I'm dying for Fringe! I just love it when all the shows start up again in the fall. I love fall. Whee!

Oh and P.S. I got another job that isn't with Netflix, it is actually a job I want, and it is mine! w00t!

Could never get the hang of Thursdays

Well it's back to our regularly scheduled programming here at the blergh. Blergh is early morning speak for blog. It's almost noon, I know, but I was up at 8:00 getting ready for my interview and saying goodbye to my mom. I think a nap is in order after I finish updating here! So when you leave your comments... just know that I'll be sleeping. Muahahaha!

I'm wearing: F21 dress, Target tights, thrifted shoes.

I wore this to my early-butt interview this morning, which I think went well, but who can tell! This is another new dress that my mom got for me. Ah, the joy of Moms! I am totally going to spoil my future offspring. Pay it forward, and all that. Maybe I'll spawn an entire generation of spoiled, stunted people who don't know how to clean up after themselves! Dreams...

My iTunes is really digging Tori Amos right now. I have it on shuffle, and I've just listened to three of her songs in a row. What's the deal, iTunes? I mean I love Tori and all, but I also enjoy variety.

Clearly I have nothing of use to talk about today. I suppose it's just too early for my brain to function properly.

Last Day With Mom

This is my mom's last day here in Portland. I'm gonna miss her so much when she's gone. At least we have a ton of fun memories to dwell upon, right?

Today we drove out to Multnomah Falls, which is right on the I-84 and is so beautiful. For some reason the majesty of it all made me feel like I was back in Montana. Oregon outdoorsy things are so much less outdoorsy than Montana things, though. In Montana you hike for miles to waterfalls, and if you're lucky there's an outhouse by the tiny gravel parking lot. At Multnomah Falls, there was a restaurant and lounge, espresso stand, snow cones and ice cream, snack bar, and everything was paved. Truly a different "nature" experience than what you get in Montana. Oh well, I don't mind, I'm not much for hiking anyway!

The above three photos are actually of Wahkeena Falls, which are a bit west of Multnomah Falls, but just as beautiful in their own right. I actually thought they were more photogenic -- less people milling about, and more moss and greenery to add to the surroundings.

I just love waterfalls so much! They're one of nature's most beautiful contraptions. Along with mountains. There's something so majestic and almost magical about watching all of that foamy white water spilling out over a high rock face into moss-lined pools below.

I had to post this picture of me and Greg; we look so derpy!

I hope you dorkpods have a great evening! And guess what? Meg has another job interview tomorrow! Eeeesh I just can't get a break. Haha not that I want one, but interviews are so stressful.

Day 4 With Mom

I'm sure you guys must be getting a bit bored with the "OMG MOM'S VISITING" posts, but this is almost the last one. Sadface. I will be sad to see my mom go. We've been having so much fun wandering around my neighborhood and checking out cool vintage stores. We even found these awesome old school games:

My mom had the Blip game on the top right. Apparently you had to like... wind it up? And an LED light would move around on the screen? Old school! I lol'd.

I decided to show my mom how I take my usual outfit shots, so we posed together and it was super dorky and fun.

I'm wearing: F21 skirt, American Eagle tee, GoJane shoes, Gap scarf thingy worn as bow tie, Ralph Lauren sunglasses, Urban Outfitters backpack.

So let me elaborate on the stupid job sitch. Turns out the job I interviewed for last Thursday, the one I really wanted, decided to temporarily put a hold on hiring, for an indefinite period of time. So nobody's getting hired. But the part that makes it so frustrating is that I was on the top of the list of people to be hired! So I almost had it, but not. I was so crushed when I heard this, and was embarrassingly crying at the entrance to the Japanese Garden... it was awful. I also thought I was going to be offered a job at Netflix, but turns out they just wanted me for a "face-to-face" interview, which is a group interview, and will involve role-playing and practice customer calls. I want to kill myself just thinking about it. Also it's in Hillsboro, which is like a million miles away... I'm just so discouraged. Oh well, at least I have some prospects. I also have a "seminar" at the Apple Store on Monday, and that would be a cool job, I think. But ugh I so wanted that other job, and I would've had it, but no, they aren't hiring anymore... sigh. Real life sucks btw.

Enough ranting! I had a great day today, and after my interview tomorrow we're going to Multnomah Falls, which should be really nice. Especially after role-playing... blergh!

Day 3 With Mom

Today my mom and I went to the Japanese Garden, and the International Rose Test Garden, which are just across the street from each other essentially. They were both so beautiful and tranquil (aside from the occasional screaming child, ugh), which was good, because I got bad news about a job I really wanted right as we arrived at the gardens. Therefore I apologize for my depressed gaze in most of these photos. I wasn't feeling quite up to smiling for photos. It was nice to be with my mom in such a beautiful place, though.

I'm wearing: F21 dress, Target shoes, Urban Outfitters backpack.

Now my perfect boyfriend is going to make us fried rice for dinner! We're so excited -- it's pretty much his specialty. Om nom nom.

Day 2 With Mom

Day 2 with my mom hasn't been quite as exhausting as yesterday, but it's close! We got up early by my standards (11:00am), and took the MAX train into downtown. We got coffee and pastries at Powell's, browsed the books for a while, and then poked around in Anthropologie, Whole Foods, and this cool store called something like Versailles Interior, which had a neat tapestry which is pictured below. Then we got delicious curry at Thai Peacock for lunch, and came on home.

Welcome to Goob Central. Where'd my chin go?

I'm wearing: F21 tunic, Target leggings, Ralph Lauren sunglasses.

We'll be having drinks at McMenamins Kennedy School later, which is this old school that's been renovated to house a restaurant, movie theater, several bars, meeting rooms, and a stage for live music. It's pretty awesome, needless to say. I'll try to get some cool pictures of it for my next post!

P.S. For dorks who think I'm silly to go to B&N over Powell's, please note: Powell's is in the middle of downtown, which is a pain in which to park (and expensive), and way farther away than B&N. Also it's a tourist trap, constantly full of people, and it's super hard to find a place to sit in the coffee shop. And if you do find a seat, you will be surrounded very closely by other people who are talking all loud. It's the opposite of relaxing, and kind of an ordeal. I'd rather drive up to the much more chill Lloyd Center and get my skinny latte than deal with Powell's on a regular basis. Just so nobody thinks I'm purposely being a gross box store supporter or anything!
